I was born in Chicago. We lived in several Midwest cities then moved back to Chicago for high school. I have specialized in art since third grade when I was chosen to attend the Cleveland Art Institute. My high school portfolio is strong in photo realism and drawing.
I went to Illinois Wesleyan University and graduated cum laude with a BFA in Sculpture. I studied with the sculptor Ed McCullough and showed at Merwin Gallery, Space Gallery and Near Normal Art Works, a collaborative gallery. I wrote art reviews/articles for the Argus newspaper. My college portfolio is strong in conceptual and ephemeral sculpture/environments.
I moved to San Diego in 1980 and studied technical illustration at Cuyamacca Community College. In 1983 I enrolled at San Diego State University in the MA program for sculpture. While I was enrolled, SDSU was accredited for an MFA so I reapplied with the expectation to become a teacher. I taught Beginning Design, 3-D Design, and Drawing – developed my own curriculum and was fully autonomous in the classroom. In 1986 I graduated with an MFA in Sculpture.
I studied with Jesse Dominguez and showed at Sushi Gallery, the Multicultural Arts Institute, the Annex Gallery at UCSD, For Y Canto Gallery and the Masters Gallery at SDSU. My graduate portfolio work is strong in site-responsive installations.
I have been in professional shows at the Brand Library Art Gallery in Glendale in CA, Glass Gallery at the University of Texas, Mesa College in San Diego and the McLean County Arts Center in IL.
Some of the multimedia projects I have done in San Diego include installations such as “nectar, hinged” at the Sierra Club, “Streetsites 1992” at the Tijuana River Estuarine Reserve and participation pieces at the Reincarnation Project Gallery and Brown Field.
I never loose track of my origins. In the Nectar Series of paintings, prints, and wall sculptures, I have brought forward the talents of my first portfolio and have developed an Audubon-style of painting birds and drawing/rendering sources of nectar.
In 2002, I made my first hummingbird sculpture out of lint, wire, copper and Mica. It was too fragile to put in the 2002 “Life Stage” show at Sushi Performance and Visual Art so I made two hummingbird paintings instead. This has evolved into the series of paintings called “nectar, ten thousand times.”
I became fascinated with the detail of miniature painting and have been able to honor my long love of Persian Prints and Sacred Art from India and Asian cultures. I also studied the spiritual essence of hummingbirds.
I was invited by Public Address to do an installation in the storefront of the Sierra Club in 2003. When the show was disassembled, I was left with what I affectionately call “art parts.” This inspired the expansion of the “nectar, hinged” project into a series of wall sculptures.
The Nectar Series is offering me a diverse platform to express my delight in hummingbirds, beauty and the sustenance of nectar - as a literal and symbolic expression of Grace. |
